We are building a business in the Ducis Community in Haiti. We are launching our creative BEM/RFA boulangerie program, called BEM/RFA Pen Lavi (bread of life in Creole). A boulangerie is a bakery that focuses mainly on baking breads rather than desserts. This program will build, establish and train both staff, community members and our older children of Restavec Freedom Alliance in building a community oven, drilling a well for clean water, and learning to bake bread specializing in the ‘twisted tail bread’ that is so well loved in southern Haiti. This bread will be used by our two foster homes, as well as sold to the local community. This BEM/RFA Pen Lavi program supports objectives to promote community empowerment as well as providing self sustaining opportunities for the RFA program. We have secured funds to seed the program. For the last six years, RFA has successfully run two foster homes for anywhere from 30 – 35 children. We have employed teachers in two schools, staffs in two programs and provide ongoing medical clinics (through our parent organization). Our Boulanger program will enable us to continue to effectively serve our impoverished community, and its working poor residents.
